Position location: Austin, TX

As a Senior Software Engineer at Western Union, you will play a key role in our platform modernization journey across North America (NA) and Latin America & Caribbean (LACA). Leveraging AI coding agents and modern engineering practices, you will design, develop, and enhance applications, internal tools, workflow automations, and platform capabilities that address customer, agent, operational, and business needs. This role focuses on delivering high-quality software solutions while applying engineering best practices, cloud technologies, and AI-assisted development to accelerate delivery and improve outcomes.
You will contribute to the modernization of legacy platforms into scalable, secure, cloud-native solutions by developing AWS microservices, cloud data solutions, distributed caching implementations, and event-driven services. Working closely with engineering teams, product managers, architects, and business stakeholders, you will help build reliable, high-performing platform capabilities that improve operational efficiency, support business growth, and enhance customer experiences across the region.
In this role, you will:
- Contribute to payment platform modernization initiatives across North America (NA), Latin America & Caribbean (LACA) regions.
- Design, develop, test, and support applications, workflow automations, internal tools, APIs, and platform services using AI-assisted engineering practices.
- Develop and modernize services using Java, Spring Boot, APIs, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native design patterns.
- Build and maintain AWS-based microservices and cloud-native applications that meet performance, reliability, and scalability requirements.
- Develop and support cloud-native data solutions using PostgreSQL, Aurora, DynamoDB, and related technologies.
- Implement and optimize distributed caching solutions using Redis, Valkey, ElastiCache, or similar technologies.
- Collaborate with product, operations, architecture, risk, compliance, QA, and customer care teams to deliver solutions from requirements through production deployment.
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve software development, testing, documentation, and engineering productivity.
- Implement telemetry, monitoring, and observability capabilities to improve platform health, reliability, and customer experience.
- Review and validate AI-generated code to ensure adherence to security, quality, compliance, and engineering standards.
- Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and architecture reviews.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by contributing reusable components, engineering standards, and best practices.
- Mentor junior engineers and help foster a culture of collaboration, learning, and engineering excellence.
Basic Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience applying software engineering best practices with a focus on security, reliability, scalability, observability, and operational excellence.
- 4+ years of experience developing cloud-native applications and microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
- 3+ years of experience developing solutions on AWS (Azure or other cloud platforms), including microservices and cloud-native architectures.
- 1+ years of experience working with event-driven architectures.
- 1+ years of experience working with cloud databases (PostgreSQL, Aurora, DynamoDB) and distributed caching technologies (Redis, Valkey, ElastiCache).
- Experience contributing to application modernization, cloud migration, or legacy transformation initiatives.
- 1+ years of experience working in Agile software development environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ years of experience with containerization, CI/CD pipelines, observability tools, and infrastructure automation.
- Experience building highly available, scalable, and resilient distributed systems.
- Hands-on experience using AI coding agents or AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity and software delivery.
- Experience developing RESTful APIs and event-driven services using Kafka or similar messaging platforms.
- Experience in Payments, FinTech, Banking, Remittance, or other high-volume transaction processing environments.
- Experience supporting multi-region or globally distributed platforms.
- Understanding of cloud security, authentication, authorization, and secure software development practices.
- Experience participating in platform modernization and cloud migration programs.
- Spanish language proficiency.

Salary
Annual base salary range is $110,000 – 135,000 USD per year. Total on-target compensation includes a base salary and short-term incentives that align with individual and company performance. Actual salaries will vary based on candidates’ qualifications, skills, and competencies.
