Role Responsibilities
As a key member of Western Union’s Compliance function in Germany, you will serve as the appointed Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) and play a critical role in ensuring that our German entities fully comply with all legal and regulatory obligations—particularly in the areas of Anti‑Money Laundering (AML) and Counter‑Terrorist Financing (CTF). You will manage regulatory interactions, oversee internal AML processes, and partner closely with senior leadership to protect the integrity of Western Union’s operations.
In this role, you will:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for German supervisory authorities, law enforcement bodies, and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).
- Fulfil MLRO responsibilities in accordance with Section 25h (7) of the German Banking Act (KWG).
- Lead the independent handling, assessment, and coordination of suspicious activity reports (SARs).
- Ensure adherence to all reporting obligations to BaFin and other regulatory authorities.
- Develop, implement, and maintain AML/CTF policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Define and monitor compliance requirements across existing and new products, services, and business initiatives.
- Train and sensitize internal staff on AML, compliance expectations, and regulatory changes.
- Collaborate closely with the Managing Director and contribute to business continuity planning.
Role Requirements
- University degree, preferably in law, economics, finance, business, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in AML, compliance, or risk management—ideally within a complex financial, payments, or regulated environment.
- At least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
- Strong knowledge of German AML/CTF regulations, supervisory expectations, and relevant financial products/processes.
- Proven experience engaging constructively with regulatory authorities and internal stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
- Strong communication skills in both German and English (written and spoken).
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team.
Work Shift
HYBRID – Western Union values in-person collaboration, problem solving, and ideation whenever possible. We believe this fosters common ways of working and supports how we execute initiatives for our customers. The expectation is to work from the office a minimum of three days a week.
