Associate Manager / Tech Lead

Role Responsibilities
As an experienced Associate Manager with strong backend development skills, particularly in Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture, to join our dynamic technology organization, you will combine hands-on technical expertise with proven leadership and people management abilities. You will lead and mentor multiple backend teams, drive best practices, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and maintainable backend services.
Technical Leadership
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of robust backend solutions using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices.
- Set and enforce coding standards, best practices, and architectural guidelines for backend development.
- Review code, provide constructive feedback, and ensure adherence to quality, security, and performance standards.
- Stay current with emerging backend technologies and trends; evaluate and recommend new tools and frameworks as appropriate.
- Guide teams in implementing scalable distributed systems.
Team & People Management
- Manage, mentor, and develop a team of backend engineers across multiple projects and teams.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and high performance.
- Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development discussions.
- Facilitate onboarding and training for new team members.
Project & Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with product managers, frontend teams, QA, and other stakeholders to define requirements, scope, and deliverables.
- Plan, prioritize, and track project progress, ensuring timely and successful delivery.
- Identify and mitigate risks, resolve conflicts, and remove roadblocks for the team.
- Communicate project status, challenges, and achievements to senior management and stakeholders.
Process Improvement
- Drive process improvements and automation to increase efficiency and quality.
- Implement and monitor agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban) within the team.
- Ensure proper documentation of code, processes, and best practices.
- Promote knowledge sharing and collaboration across teams and departments.
Role Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field.
- 9+ years of experience in backend development, with at least 2 years in technical leadership or management role.
- Deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture.
- Experience with RESTful API design, database technologies (SQL/NoSQL), and distributed systems.
- Strong understanding of backend performance, scalability, and security best practices.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) is a plus.
- Experience in front end technologies like angular is a plus.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to manage and mentor engineers in a fast-paced, large-scale environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in large organizations with distributed teams.
- Exposure to event-driven architectures, messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ), and monitoring tools.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and infrastructure as code.
Work Shift
Western Union values in-person collaboration, problem solving, and ideation whenever possible. We believe this fosters common ways of working and supports how we execute initiatives for our customers. The expectation is to work from the office a minimum of three days a week.
