Western Union Celebrates Women

March was a big month for the women at Western Union as we celebrated globally Women’s Month and International Women’s Day.

To kick off the month-long celebrations, the Women@Western Union Employee Resource Group (ERG) hosted an International Women’s Day Global Panel: Leadership’s Role in Mentoring at our headquarters in Denver.

Western Union CEO, Devin McGranahan opened the event with a few words and an announcement of the Extraordinary Women Winners.

Cherie Axelrod, Chief Enterprise Risk & Compliance Officer and Women@WesternUnion ERG executive sponsor welcomed all event attendees both onsite and online before giving the floor to Threads Worldwide founder, Angela Melfi who shared Western Union’s role in their social enterprise. Attendees onsite were also able to support Threads Worldwide by purchasing products such as jewelry made by their female artisan partners.

The panel composed of Karen Whalen- Chief People Officer, Jennifer Anderson- Senior Vice President, Global Total Rewards, Erica Edwards- Senior Vice President, Talent Acquisition, and Julia Jacobs- Vice President, People Strategy, Regional Support. Emily Treaster- Vice President, Managing Associate General Counsel, Global Litigation and Denver Site Lead served as moderator.

Our global offices also held their own International Women’s Day and Women’s Month Celebrations.

Argentina

Our Argentina office celebrated women with breakfast at our Buenos Aires office prepared by women entrepreneurs from “Manos en Acción”, an NGO supported by Western Union Foundation Argentina. Ale Marcote also spoke virtually with the employees about “How to Transform Impostor Syndrome Into Our Ally”.

Australia

Our colleagues in Sydney had a fun International Women’s Day celebration with a quiz game and some sweet treats.

Barbados

Our Barbados office held a watch party of the Global International Women’s Day Panel. The Women@WesternUnion Circle in Barbados also gathered to talk about “Leadership Role in Mentorship -Driving Organizational Growth and Development”. Natalie Abrahams, CEO of Digicel Barbados also came to talk on Positioning yourself for success.

Costa Rica

Presenter and journalist Ginnés Rodríguez visited Western Union Costa Rica as part of the International Women’s Day activities organized by Women@WesternUnion Costa Rica Circle. She talked about “Impostor Syndrome and the Search for Women Empowerment.” The activity was attended by around 200 people, onsite and virtually.

India

There were a lot of activities prepared for the women at our India office for International Women’s Day:

  • Female employees got an opportunity to engage in focused conversations with nine esteemed mentors led by site lead Rajeev Mago. Each session, lasting 20 minutes, allowed for insightful discussions fostering growth and empowerment.
  • Male employees shared heartfelt words of appreciation for their female colleagues. Appreciation cards were given further highlighting the camaraderie and support within the team.
  • Nishant Mehra and Gurudatta Shelke shared a touching poem for the female employees which captivated the audience. The site band also serenaded our female colleagues with melodious tunes. The evening concluded with snacks and tea, creating a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Indonesia

Our Indonesia office celebrated IWD together in the office where all colleagues wore purple on the day. Tea and snacks with purple colors were served and mini bouquets of purple orchids were given to all the ladies in the office.

A representative from the British Embassy Jakarta shared about Future Cities in Indonesia. This project reminds us to value women’s contribution to a better world and aligns with our mission to make financial services accessible to people everywhere.

Lithuania

Site Leader, Dan Marostica together with other male site leadership team members distributed flowers and greeted all the ladies. Snacks were also shared by the employees onsite.

Before the month ended, Dr. Eglė Radvilė, a distinguished lecturer from Vilnius University Business School and an expert in digital transformation and innovation gave a presentation that reignited employees’ passion for change and innovation.

Mexico

It was a packed month in our Mexico office with these activities:

  • Woman Circles: Your professional life as part of Western Union team
  • Women In payments Pannel – Guiding growth Pannel: Claudia Reyes Armebianchi- Vice President, Sub-Regional General Manager was one of the panelists.
  • International Women’s Day: Experiences of accompaniment and sorority in the business environment conference by a representative of COPRED (Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination in Mexico City) to raise awareness and to continue building spaces for dialogue on the importance of building labor inclusion actions that will allow for greater opportunities for women in the workplace.

New Zealand

Our team in Auckland made sure to celebrate International Women’s Day and the women in the office with some treats.

Peru/ Panama/ Chile

Employees from our Peru, Panama, and Chile offices joined in celebrating International Women’s Day with some employees wearing purple to raise awareness. A Women’s Empowerment Talk was also conducted through our Employee Assistance Program. A gynecologist also spoke with employees with regards to the importance of doing an annual checkup.

Philippines

Our Philippines office held an Inspire Inclusion: International Women’s Day Panel Discussion with Karren Digno- Senior Manager Agent Support and Patricia Parian- Analyst, Project Management from our Quezon City office and Rochelle Iglesias- Country Director, and Lissy Cruz – Senior Manager, Marketing from our Taguig City office. Aubrey Maldonado- Supervisor- Talent Acquisition served as host and moderator during the event.

Singapore

It was a sweet International Women’s Day celebration in our Singapore office as the team celebrated with cake and gave little tokens of appreciation to the women in the office.

Ireland, United Kingdom, Africa, and Italy

During Cherie Axelrod’s visit to Dublin, she relaunched our joint London/Dublin Women@WesternUnion circle and launched two new circles – Africa and Italy.

The meeting was opened by Tim Keane, site leader for Dublin and Bart Stencel, site leader for London. Houda E Hassani El Alaoui, site leader for Casablanca and Kathleen Staggi, site leader for Rome attended virtually for the launch of the Africa and Italy circles.

Celebrating women does not end for us here at Western Union

Here’s Cherie’s message to employees who aim to inspire inclusivity in their day-to-day.

We have the privilege of working with people of different geographies. This allows us to support our customers in a way that will change their lives. With that, it is so important to be inclusive, even in the simplest things.
